Too Heavenly Minded?
Have you ever heard (or maybe said!) this about someone?
“He’s so heavenly minded that he’s no earthly good!”
In reaction to that, I’ve also heard people say:
“He’s so earthly minded that he’s no heavenly good!”
Clearly, these are two extremes…neither of which is acceptable or helpful.
But what does the Lord say about this?
Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. (Col. 3:1-2)
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Mt. 6:10)
For the Lord it’s not an “either / or” situation, it’s “both / and.”
He wants us, His people, to be both heavenly minded and of great earthly good!
But we can never lose sight of the order here: We must first be heavenly (or spiritually) minded before we’ll ever be any earthly good. Jesus reinforced this idea when He commanded us to seek first God’s kingdom (Mt. 6:33).
God is spirit (Jn. 4:24), so it’s no surprise that His kingdom is, first and foremost, a spiritual domain. Jesus described it this way: “For behold, the kingdom of God is within you [in your hearts] and among you [surrounding you].” (Lk. 17:21 AMP)
His desire is to bring the realities of His spiritual realm into our natural world…through us! But in order for this to happen, we have to discover and experience for ourselves what those spiritual realities are.
Through the blood of Jesus, every good thing that our heavenly Father is, and that His realm consists of, is ours to know and experience (Jas. 1:17). How? By continually seeking and setting our mind on those things that are above. I want my mind to be more aware that I am a spiritual being who operates in the spiritual dimension. I want to receive more revelation from God than information from the world. I want to see more of what He’s doing at any given moment than what the devil’s doing.
Will you join me? Let’s ask the Lord for more grace to seek Him, His kingdom, and the things above a whole lot more than we ever have before! Let’s surrender to the transformation process He offers, and let Him make us into carriers of His presence and glory. Then His will shall be done here on earth as it is in heaven.
And then, perhaps, people will say of you and me: “You’re so heavenly minded that you’re of great earthly good!”
